Ferris State Clinic

We had a lot of fun at the Ferris State clinic/indoor tournament yesterday. Central Montcalm's team won one and lost three games. We took 10 girls who participate in the program, many of them varsity players. We're looking forward to beginning practice on March 9 at 4:15 p.m.

Season finales

Our games last week were rained out. A huge thunderstorm flew through Mt. Pleasant. The lightening and thunder were incredible. We were unable to play, but we waited until the very end before we had to concede to the weather.

We'll be playing at 5:30 and 7:15 this Thursday. These will be the last games of the summer. Thanks to everyone for participating and thanks to the parents for providing food, beverage, and rides.

Summer ball was a great deal of fun, once again!

Summer Softball Off and Running

We played our first games of the summer last night, beating Mt. Pleasant Kopy Korner 12–6 and falling to Carson City 8–6 is a time–shortened game. We play again next Wednesday, so if you're looking for some fun on a Wednesday night, plan to come watch us at the Union Township fields at 5:30 and 7:00.

State Finals This Week–End

The MHSAA State Finals for baseball and softball are this week–end in Battle Creek. Tuesday night are the Quarterfinals. Two games (Division I and II) will be played at CMU. Two teams from the CSAA are still alive.

Reed City is playing Portland on Tuesday in Mt. Pleasant at Central Michigan University's field. At this point, I do not know the time of the game. Morley–Stanwood has a short jaunt to Cadillac to play Gladstone. It should make for some excellent softball.

So, if you're looking for something to do this week–end, consider the trip to Battle Creek.

Summer Softball

Our first summer game will be Wednesday night at 5:30 at the VARSITY field in Mt. Pleasant. The varsity field is located right by Mt. Pleasant High School on Preston Street. We have not received an official schedule from the league yet; however, we will play on Wednesday nights at 5:30 and 7 p.m.

Hornets come close at Montabella

The second game ended up with the Hornets coming up one run short. Going into the seventh inning (CM was the "home" team), Central Montcalm led 3–1. But a hit, couple of walks, and couple more hits put Montabella up 5–3. The Hornets rallied back in the bottom of the seventh, pushing across one run, but the team couldn't muster up enough to tie the game up. The final was 5–4.

Isabelle Williams tossed a good game, pitching seven innings, allowing six hits, three strike outs, and five walks. Overall, she allowed three earned runs. Stacy Knowlton was 4–4 with two runs scored and three stolen bases. Amber Heitmeyer was 2–3, Nicole Fountain had a double, and Faith Fredrickson had a pinch hit walk in the seventh inning.

In the first game, the Mustangs had a six–run third inning, aided by a couple of fielding errors, to jump ahead. Emily Dyer had a run–scoring double, as did Christina Hazekamp. Fredrickson added a double in the game, as well. Montabella won 14–4 in six innings.

Nicole Fountain took the loss in the game.

The Hornets travel to Chippewa Hills High School tomorrow night.

Varsity squad continues to improve, but Ionia wins Hornet Invite

The Ionia Bulldogs won the annual Hornet Invitational by defeating Saranac 7–0, Central Montcalm 15–1, and Montabella 15–3.

The Hornets lost all three games. Montabella won the first game 14–4; Ionia won the second game 15–1; Saranac won the third and final game 12–9 in eight innings. We battled during the third game, leading 4–2 after one inning, but falling behind 7–5. A two–run rally in the bottom of the seventh allowed us to tie the game. We used the "international tie–breaker" in extra innings and Saranac scored five runs and we only scored twice.

We continue to improve, especially on the defensive side of the ball. We're getting more aggressive to the ball and reacting quicker. Starting with last Friday's double header against Lakeview, we embarked on 14 games in 13 days!

This week the varsity travels to Montabella on Monday, Chippewa Hills on Tuesday, and hosts Chippewa Hills on Friday. The JV schedule features Montabella visiting on Monday, Chippewa Hills visiting on Tuesday, and the a trip to Chippewa Hills on Friday. Friday night's game will be the season finale for the JV.

The following week, the varsity travels to Lakeview for a pre–district game against White Cloud at 2 p.m. on Tuesday. The bus will leave at 12:30. The final regular season games for the varsity will be a double header on Wednesday in Greenville.

Clinic Successful

Our softball clinic for 9, 10, 11, and 12 year olds went really well last night. We had 32 girls who worked in three different groups: hitting, defense, and sliding. Thanks to all of the JV and varsity girls for being the coaches for the night — and thanks to all the young softballers for working so hard to learn the great game of softball.

New Week New Attitude

After dropping 2 games to Morley the team decided to hold a pratice on Monday which was a scheduled day off. They decided to work on basics and re- energize there game attitude. It is supposed to be 70 and aggressive today and no matter how the score turns out we will be aggressive and fundamentally sound. There is no quit in our JV team and we intend to prove it with skill, attitude, heart and team work. Go Green

Reed City Take 2 from JV

The JV girls drop 2 at Reed City 14 to 4 and 14 to 9. Emily Christensen started the game and pitched several strong innings but the Central Bats would not wake up to support her in the first game. Emma Patmore continues to work on switch hitting and getting the slap down and is very close to getting one through the in field. Game 2 was a little different story with hungry bats and a different attitude the hits started to come fly balls, Line drives, well placed bunts were on the menu and the Central girls were working on serving up some runs. Annabelle Williams had several keys hits to keep the Central hopes alive. Danielle Chapin started the game and pitched very well after being on the I.R. for a week but tweaked her back again batting. Emily Christensen came in to relief and did a good job to complete the game for Danielle. Emma Patmore caught her first game. Emily Anna had a unassisted double play and Emily Evans showed us her fast glove by catching and knocking down the hot line drives down 3rd base. It was a valiant effort but we fell a little short. Stay with itLadies you have the proper attitude and the winning will come.

District Tournament

Central Montcalm will play in District # 77 at Lakeview High School on either May 27, 30, or 31. We are actually Division III this season. Next season we will return to Division II, according to the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA).

Hold off the rain

The weather report doesn't sound the greatest, but hopefully the rain and lightening will hold off and we'll be able to get our games in today. The varsity hosts Chippewa Hills at 4 p.m. today. The JV bus leaves at 2:35 to travel to Remus to battle Chippewa Hills.

We don't have a tournament this week, but the Hornet Invitational Track Meet is next Saturday, May 10. Softball is in charge of the long jump, and we need four parent volunteers to run that event. If you are interested, please let Mr. Powell or me know.

Our next tournament is Saturday, May 17, when we host Montabella, Ionia, and Saranac in the Hornet Invitational. Game times will be 9 a.m., 11 a.m., and 2 p.m. Central will play all of their games at the varsity field. The visitors will play both at the varsity field and the "jail fields" downtown Stanton.

STEADY AS SHE GOES

As the season continues to move forward you want to judge a team by its record. But being a JV team you have to look at the mental wins, the errors we made yesterday we turned into a great play today. They questions you asked became clear when they happened on the playing field. As a team we are moving forward everyday with positive attitudes, strong play and the desire to be part of a winning atomosphere. We are the foundation of a new attitude that will move Central Montcalm Softball forward with dedication, diversity, desire and heart. Believe in yourselves and good things will happen. So far you have held good teams scoreless for 3 innings or more with good defense and smart play more then once. The hits will come with the hits the runs will follow you will ask more questions you will become stronger mentally which will translate onto the field and then the good things start to happen. If we are 3 and 8 or 8 and 3 we win everytime we walk off the field. Friday we travel to Chip Hills and I know that we will give it our all any team is beatable if we apply the skills that we have learned and praticed. As I said believe in yourselves as a team and good things will happen. If you don't believe me about how far you have come think back to the 2 weeks we were in the gym and the things that you said you could not do and are doing now with out even a thought. Better yet, check out Bruna catching fly balls throwing runners out at 2nd, laying down bunts or Emily Evans catching a line drive down 3rd base looking into her glove and saying yup I did that or Emily Christensen scooping a throw up at first and turning to fire to the next out.Wow you all have came a long ways and we have a long ways to go forward. Wildcats take two from the Hornets

A nine–run fifth inning for the Lakeview Wildcats helped the host team prevail with a 19–9 victory.

Central jumped out to a quick 2–0 lead in the first when Stacy Knowlton walked, Elisa Lenneman walked, and Ariana Butler knocked a two–run double. Overall, Butler was 3–4 in the first game with five RBI. Nicole Fountain had two hits in the game, and Isabelle Williams added a single.

Fountain took the loss pitching 5.1 innings, allowing 14 earned runs, 12 hits, a strike out, and six walks. Alysse McIntyre also pitched for .1 innings, allowing five earned runs and three walks.

The Hornets jumped out to a 3– lead in game 2 as Knowlton walked, Lenneman was safe on an error and Amber Heitmeyer stroked a 2–run triple to right field. Overall in the game, Knolton had three hits, three runs scored, and three stolen bases. Annie Garbow and Emily Dyer both added hits, and Williams scored two runs.

Williams took the loss, pitching 6 innings and allowing eight hits and eight earned runs. She struck out seven and walked nine. The Hornets are now 1–13.

The Hornets played much better defense tonight. We host the Chippewa Hills Warriors Friday night. Game time for the first game is 4 p.m.

Hornets take 2nd at Saranac Tourney

It was a cold day with 30 mph winds, but the Central Montcalm softball team didn't let the weather bother them.

They scored four second inning runs and never looked back. Nicole Fountain led off with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch and third on a passed ball. Then Bailey Wilcox knocked a triple, scoring Fountain. Isabelle Williams followed with a single, plating Wilcox. Stacy Knowlton popped out to third, then Elisa Lenneman had an infield single to put runners on the corners. Amber Heitmeyer smacked a two–run double, plating Wilcox and Lenneman.

A four–run fourth inning added to the Hornets lead. Hits by Williams, Knowlton, and a walk to Heitmeyer set up Ariana Butler's three–run double. She also scored on a throwing error.

Overall, in the first game, Knowlton had three hits, Heitmeyer two hits, Butler three hits, and Wilcox and Williams both had two hits. Christina Hazekamp added a double. Fountain earned the win going 3.2 innings with five earned runs, seven hits, two strike outs, and six walks. Williams earned the save with 3.1 innings pitched, one hit, and four walks.

The final score was 12–9. The game took a little over two hours to complete.

After a four–hour wait between game 2 (Middleville Thornapple–Kellogg vs. Hastings) and the consolation game, the championship game started at 3:15 p.m.

Williams started, pitched three innings, gave up 10 earned runs, 12 hits, two strike outs, and six walks. The Hornets left eight runners on base, including three runners on third who arrived there with less than two outs. We hit the ball well, but sometimes right at the Middleville players.

Lenneman had a hit and scored a run, Heitmeyer had two hits (including a run–scoring double), Faith Fredrickson had a hit, Wilcox added a hit, and Annie Garbow had a bunt base hit in the key fifth inning when the Hornets rallied for two runs.

Allyse McIntyre pitched a scoreless inning and Fountain pitched .2 innings giving up a run and hit. The Hornets played much better defense on the day.

Central Montcalm is 1–12 on the season and travel to Big Rapids on Tuesday.

The Hornets dropped two against league–rival Big Rapids tonight.

Big Rapids won the first game 19–1 in three innings and the second game 15–0 in four innings. The highlight of the first game was Annie Garbow's bunt that turned into a run. With two outs in the second inning, Garbow bunted and the third basemen threw the ball into right field. She proceeded to score on the play!

The second game featured better at bats. Stacy Knowlton had a basehit and Allyse McIntyre had a sacrifice bunt in the third inning, moving Nicole Fountain and Faith Fredrickson up.

Isabelle Williams took the loss in both games.

We play at the Saranac tournament tomorrow.

The JV game was canceled due to a power outage in Big Rapids. They visit Ionia and play three games in the annual JV tournament.

Varsity drops two to Morley Stanwood

Morley Stanwood visited last night and swept the varsity team 16–0 and 18–8. The Hornet defense played poorly in both games, with eight errors in game one and 13 in game two. The bats finally came alive in the second game, with some key base hits with runners on base.

Varsity drops three at Pewamo–Westphalia tourney

The Hornets continue to improve. You can see how the players are reacting to the ball in a game Saturday afternoon. Central Montcalm hosts Morley–Stanwood in league action Tuesday afternoon.

The Hornets played three games on the day, losing to Pewamo–Westphalia 12–2, Bentley 9–6, and Grand Rapids North Point Christian 12–9. The team showed character in both the Bentley and North Point games, battling back and forth all game long.

Highlights on the day included solid pitching from the freshmen who joined the team for the day's games. Issabelle Williams and Danielle Chapin were both solid in their varsity debuts.

The first game against the hosts, P–W, started with a quick first inning and two quick outs in the second inning, before two Hornet errors opened the gates for four unearned runs. Central scored twice in their half of the second, but poor defense contributed to eight more P–W runs. The game ended after five innings. Izzy Williams took the loss, with a 5–inning complete game, 13 hits, five walks, and a strike out.

Game number two featured Central jumping out to a 1–0 lead, but three walks and a big error allowed the Bentley team to take a 2–1 lead. The game was back and forth. Hitting highlights including Elisa "Lenni" Lenneman going 3–3 and Stacy Knowlton walking twice, singling, and scoring two runs. Emily Dyer also had two hits and a run in the game. Chapin took the loss, going the first four innings, allowing eight hits and 2 earned runs.

The tournament finale was another back and forth game, with North Point eventually winning with a four–run fifth inning and five–run sixth inning. A couple of errors hurt CM in the sixth, leading to 3 unearned runs. Izzy Williams started and took the loss with 4 2/3 inning pitched, seven hits, five walks, three strike outs and five earned runs. Chapin threw in relief.

Hitting highlights included a 3–4 game with two runs for Knowlton. She also swiped two bases. Christina Hazekamp had two hits and two RBI, Dyer added three hits, and Amber Heitmeyer had two hits and 2 RBI.

Other highlights included Faith Fredrickson winning the home run contest with two home runs and Annie Garbow won the throwing contest by hitting the screen at home plate from center field twice. Congratulations!

JV Girls drop 2 to RC

The JV Girls dropped 2 games to RC 16-4 & 8 -4. Being a young team we are bound to have a few ups and downs and you judge a team about how they react to a down period. The girls played with a lot of heart and determination and a coach can not ask for a lot more. We all walked away with something positive from the games. We will be going up against a tough Morley Stanwood Team on Tuesday and I know they will be ready to give it there all. Thanks for your support

Varsity blanked in Reed City

The powerful Reed City Coyotes beat the varsity squad 9–0 and 12–0 last night in Reed City. Central Montcalm managed one hit in both games, with Bailey Wilcox getting a single in the first game and Stacy Knowlton getting one in the nightcap.

We're showing improvement, but have a ways to go. The Coyotes should challenge their northern CSAA counterparts in Big Rapids and Morley Stanwood for the league title.

The tournament this Saturday is at Pewamo–Westphalia High School (5101 S Clintonia Rd, Westphalia, MI). the best way to get there is to drive M–66 South to Ionia and take M-21 all the way to Pewamo and turn South on Clintonia Rd. The field is about 2 miles after the turn. It's in the middle of nowhere! We are currently scheduled to play at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., and 2 p.m. Around lunchtime there will be some softball skills contests. We hope to see you all there supporting the Lady Hornets!

Parent Meeting

Thanks to everyone who attended the parent meeting last night. In order to share the information with everyone, a summary is provided:

Coaching Staff
The varsity coaches are Rick Heitmeyer, Rex Helms, and Teresa Addis. Junior varsity coaches are Jan Powell and Taryn Powell. We work together and focus on softball as a 9–12 program. JV players will often be used on varsity during tournaments. Players are also brought along for the district tournament each season.

We need your help with some things!
Please don’t coach from the stands. This is a negative for the players, the coaching staff, and others.

Please don’t vent to coaches before, during, or right after a game! We are open to talking to you about concerns, but please try to approach us after practice or call and set up a time — or just talk about an issue on the phone. Venting frustrations before, during, or after a game very seldom leads to a positive meeting or resolution!

Please encourage all girls! Negative comments about mistakes, errors, etc. do nothing but hurt. Please be a positive influence in the crowd!

Be a positive supporter of Central Montcalm athletics!

Banner Sales:
The purpose is to raise for camp, equipment, uniform enhancements, etc. We are trying to sell 20 and right now have sold 10 with 7 more possible. If you know of anyone who may want to advertise, please let us know!

Food for games
We passed around a sheet to sign-up on (parents can coordinate) for both JV and varsity games.

Tournaments
The school district is not providing transportation for week–end tournaments.

Summer league in MP:
Great competition in a laid back atmosphere where our softball players get a chance to work on things! The cost is $12/athlete and the team cost is $120 (we are working on sponsorship). They (The Amateur Softball Association) made a major change in the way they finance the league (used to be $180/team and roster).

Hornets rebound with much better game against Eagles

Carson City–Crystal swept us in our first double header tonight in Stanton. The Eagles won the first game 19–1 in three innings before besting the home team 11–8 in the second game.

In the first game Bailey Wilcox took the loss. She pitched 1/3 of an inning, walking 7 and giving up 9 runs. Nicole Fountain pitched 2-2/3 innings of relief, allowing 10 runs. Stacy Knowlton had the team's only hit, a single.

The second game was much better. Central Montcalm were the "visitors" and jumped out to a 3–0 lead after one inning. Knowlton started by lining to center, but the center fielder dropped the ball for an error. She went to second on a passed ball and moved to third on a single by Amber Heitmeyer. Wilcox had an rbi single later in the inning. She was followed by Christina Hazekamp's run scoring double.

The bats went silent until a big four–run sixth inning. Knowlton singled, Lenneman was safe on a fielding error by the third baseman and Heitmeyer lined a run–scoring double into right field. Faith Fredrickson followed Heitmeyer's long double with a long drive to the center field wall. Her double knocked Heitmeyer in. Wilcox followed with a liner to right that almost went over the fence. Her triple scored Fredrickson.

In the seventh, Emily Dyer led off with a base hit, advanced to second and stole third base before scoring.

Nicole Fountain took the loss, pitching 6 innings, walking 11, striking out 8, and hitting 2. She also gave up 9 hits.

Overall, hitting highlights included:

Knowlton 3-5 with 2 runs
Heitmeyer 2-5 with a double and rbi
Fredrickson with a double and rbi
Wilcox 3-4 with 2 rbi and a triple
Hazekamp with a 2B and rbi

We travel to Reed City for a league double header on Friday.

Fulton Tournament Canceled

Tomorrow's tournament at Fulton High School has been canceled. It will not be made up.

Our Carson City Crystal games will be played Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Today's Game Has Been Postponed

Today's game, scheduled for 4:00 p.m. against Carson City–Crysal, has been postponed until Tuesday, April 15, at 4:00 p.m. Hope to see you then!

The varsity will host Carson City-Crystal tomorrow, while the JV will be on the road.

Saturday, the varsity will be attending the Fulton High School tournament. We play Leslie at 10 a.m. and the either Beal City or Fulton game at noon.

Meeting Friday, Practice Monday

Open Gym Reminder

Remember, we will have open gym every Sunday afternoon from 3:30–5:30 in the high school gymnasium.

Team camp at Ferris State University happens on Sunday, February 17.
